History of Tacurong City

The area that became Tacurong City was once part of the Municipality of Buluan in the former Province of Cotabato. According to the Tacurong City Government, the settlement was originally known as Pamasang, named after a creek that flowed through the area.

The name Tacurong is traditionally associated with the talakudong, a type of head covering worn for protection from the sun and rain. The talakudong later became an important cultural symbol of the city and the inspiration for the annual Talakudong Festival.

Tacurong was officially created as a municipality on August 3, 1951, through Executive Order No. 462, issued by President Elpidio Quirino. At the time, it formed part of the then Province of Cotabato. Portions of its original territory were later separated when Tantangan became a municipality in 1961 and President Quirino was created in 1973.

On August 16, 2000, Republic Act No. 8805, known as the Charter of the City of Tacurong, was approved. The conversion of Tacurong into a component city was ratified in a plebiscite held on September 18, 2000.

Today, Tacurong is the only component city in Sultan Kudarat and remains an important center for trade, transportation, education, healthcare, and services in the province.
